Neuropsychiatric symptoms of Alzheimer’s dementia and their association with dorsolateral prefrontal cortex TMS evoked potentials

چکیده

Background Alzheimer’s Dementia (AD) is characterized by cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS). Recently, decline in AD has been linked to increased cortical excitability. However, the relationship between NPS excitability remains unclear. This study investigated dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Method 24 participants with probable diagnosed using National Institute of Aging-Alzheimer’s Association criteria (Mage (SD) = 74.1 (7.2) years) were recruited followed for up 6 months. Global cognition was assessed Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI-Q) total score subdomain scores. Single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) applied at DLPFC (localized MRI-based neuronavigation) a frequency 0.1 Hz, sufficient intensity; collected 62 channel electroencephalography (EEG) recorded from scalp. TMS-evoked potential (TEP) peak amplitudes individual TEP peaks (P30, N45 P60) calculated. Result NPI-Q severity positively correlated P30 (r (19) .64, p .003) negatively (22) -.46, .033). These associations remained significant after controlling age, sex (DLPFC (ß .93, .001) -.47, .031)). Further, month follow baseline (16) -.56, .025). Among subdomains, apathy -.42, .049). Conclusion burden associated excitatory activity (i.e., P30) inhibitory N45) combined TMS-EEG over DLPFC. largely driven domain. findings may have implications developing neurophysiological biomarkers targeted treatment interventions AD.

Orbital Versus Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex

Content differentiation models posit that different areas of the prefrontal cortex perform similar operations but differ in terms of the content that is operated on. For example, it has been suggested that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) perform similar working memory or inhibitory operations, but on different types of content (e.g., reward versus s...

Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex prevents short-latency saccade and vergence: a TMS study.

This study explores whether vergence eye movements along the median plane can be triggered with short latencies, and the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in controlling such movements. We used a gap paradigm and applied transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in 10 humans making saccades or vergence. TMS over the motor cortex had no effect on any eye movement parameter. TMS ov...

Possible Role of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in Error Awareness: Single-Pulse TMS Evidence

Background: Error awareness is essential to maintain an adaptive and goal-directed behavior and is supposed to rely on the activity of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). However, studies employing electrophysiological methods and functional resonance imaging (fMRI) do not allow to establish a causal relationship between error awareness and implicated brain structures. Objective: ...

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in Patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder to Improve Decision Making and Reduce Obsession Symptoms

Objective: Recent studies on treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have investigated noninvasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to improve patients’ impaired emotion and cognition. However, such experiments have yielded mixed results, especially with respect to cognition. This study aimed to investigate whethe...

Neuropsychiatric symptoms and severity of dementia

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) cause distress, disabilitiy and reduced quality of life for both the patient and their families. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence of NPS as a specific stage of dementia status. METHODS A cross-sectional study in patients attending an outpatient clinic for dementia was performed. We applied the Neuropsychiatric Inventory and Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) ...
